Oriental & Area Rugs
All rugs - whether machine made, handmade, small rug or a large rug carpet - will last longer and retain value through the years if properly cleaned and cared for.
Oriental carpets have had a magical appeal since Scheherazade first told the story of Aladdin and his flying carpet. For thousands of years, oriental carpets have inspired literature, art and music. Understand that to be considered an authentic oriental rug it has to be created by the hands of women from oriental countries, the emphasis on “hands”. The real oriental rug pile is fixed on the base threads with a knot, and that is done not by a machine but human fingers. A machine cannot tie the knots.
Amongst the handmade rugs, there are two basic types: Flat weave and knotted. Other categories of handmade rugs are gun tufted, hooked, soumak, needle point, and chain-stitched rugs. The best rugs are either hand woven or hand knotted. Even though the other rugs are handmade they are not as durable as the hand knotted or hand woven rugs.
When maintaining your rug, always vacuum the rug without the beating brush; you can either turn the brush off, or just use the attachments. Never vacuum the rug’s fringes. The continued catching of the fringe in the suction of a vacuum cleaner causes the fringes to break and tear. Keeping your rug clean and vacuuming them when necessary is good for them.
Handmade rugs can last generations in good condition, give remarkably long service, and age beautifully with proper care. Following recommendations will help you in taking good care of your fine rugs & carpets. The beauty and life of handmade rugs depend largely on cleanliness and care. Handmade rugs should be washed regularly every three to five years depending on the use and the amount of traffic they bear. The best method is to have them cleaned when they look soiled. This should be done by a competent cleaning expert.
