Types of Deodorizers
- Masking agents – This class of product is designed to substitute a pleasant odor with an unpleasant one or in other words, make something smell better. It is generally nothing more than a type of perfume that masks the unpleasant odor. These products are generally compatible with most cleaning chemicals, and can be sprayed on directly, fogged, or mixed with the cleaning chemical.
- Pairing agents – These agents are found in the general-purpose deodorizers. The chemical will pair or combine with the odor molecule and chemically neutralize it. This type of product has a broader use than the masking agent and can usually be sprayed on directly, fogged, or mixed with the cleaning chemical.
- Enzyme – This is a specialty class of deodorizer which works on the basis of natural enzymes and bacteria digesting the problem causing bacteria and organic matter. Enzymes find their highest use in treating urine.
- Disinfectants, Bacteriostats – These products are designed to kill and control pathogens and bacteria. A product can only claim to be a disinfectant if it is registered with the EPA. Quaternary Ammonium Chloride is the most widely used type disinfectant for use on carpet and perhaps the closest to what may be considered an ideal disinfectant. While these products are effective against many bacteria, mold, and mildew, they have limitations. Caution should be exercised when using other chemicals. Disinfectants are usually cationic and will not mix with anionic surfactants. They are also limited in that they will not eliminate chemical and organic odors but just the source of those odors if they come from bacteria, mold or mildew.
- Anti-microbials – This class of product is designed to give long-term control of bacteria, mold and mildew. New technology advancement makes it possible for this type of chemical to actually bond itself to the carpet and continue to kill for months ahead. Neither anit-mocrobials nor disinfectants should be used on the 5th generation stain resist carpets.
